doranwen: the last five lines of an Archibald Lampman poem called Snow (The world seems shrouded)

A somewhat belated wishlist

I'm so late with posting - have been utterly swamped by life and projects in the past few weeks. It's been exciting seeing all your wishlists come in and I hope I can find a few minutes to check out some and see if there's anything I can contribute.

This year I don't have a ton of things to wish for:

1. Volunteer to help with the Yahoo Groups (Fandom) Rescue Project. It's a massive project but it would be so neat to get it all done, and 100 good volunteers would do it. Other than anime in general (some specific fandoms not counted there) and a few tiny things, most areas are still open for tagging (everything from genealogy to bands to alumni groups to every fandom under the sun that existed before 2019). All you need is time, the ability to use Google Sheets, and the ability to be careful with details. If you can't do one of those, maybe you know someone who could and might be interested in helping? Just tell them about the project, perhaps? :)

2. Old educational software (game or not) for Windows you don't want or can't use: (But definitely ask me first, in case I already have it and you'd be wasting your time/money to send them here.) I'm taking old computers people can't use or don't want, putting Linux on them, and configuring them to be useful for a local school or low-income families. If the computers are relatively new enough (like Windows 10, as opposed to Windows XP or 7) I can install a software program called Lutris which acts as a one-stop game/program launcher for games from a number of sources - not only modern Linux ones, but modern Windows games, DOS, Amiga, and my favorite - old games (generally abandonware at this point) that ran on Windows 3.1/95/98. It's easier to run them on Linux now than Windows, and I've been figuring out how to create Lutris installer scripts for many games to make it easy for others. So if you find you have CDs of educational software/games from that era which are buggy or just don't run on your Windows 10/11 computer, and you want to get rid of them, I'm happy to be the destination for them.

3. Donate older-but-still-usable electronics to organizations that can make them useful. I love seeing computers revitalized with Linux. While I'm sure you're too far from me to donate any to my project (anyone in western WA state? lol), there are organizations in many locations that will refurbish and make older computers useful. (Though I maintain that to really make use of old hardware you have to switch away from Windows - which is far more resource-hungry than most Linux distros. I don't know how many organizations consider that one, lol.)

4. Write me a fanfic! You can find my fanfic exchange letters here.
Fandom list (going back to 2019 as far as the exchange letters go): 1-800-Missing (TV), Alphas, C-16: FBI, Cybergeddon, Earth Girl, Gold Diggers (1996), Law & Order: SVU, Leverage, Lois & Clark:TNAOS, Profiler, Push (2009), Rizzoli & Isles, Rookie Blue, Smallville, Sue Thomas F.B.Eye, The Pretender, Tomorrow When the War Began (2010), Women's Murder Club (TV), Worldweavers, X-Men original timeline movies

I'm not currently interested in receiving Matrix fic, and haven't watched past S3 of FBI and S2 of FBI: Most Wanted, so although you'll find those in the exchange letters, it's probably best to stay clear of those (unless you think you can write a spoiler-free FBI or FBI MW fic). And I know this is very, very late to ask for a fic, and I absolutely don't expect one by Christmas or New Year's or anything like that - but you will honestly make me happy *any* time of the year if you write me a fic, so if this is something you think you can do, please don't worry about timeframes. :) (Use the DNW list from the most recent letter or letters if you do.)

5. Obligatory Amazon wishlist: Here
I'm always good with used books, and for CDs/DVDs I just want them in nice enough condition that they aren't scratched.

6. Music instruments: This one I don't expect to ever receive, but I'm wishing anyway. Should you come across a spare musical instrument, I can put it to good use. Either by playing it myself (pretty much anything stringed I'm good with) or by giving it to someone else who can't afford an instrument but who has talent and desire to play.

7. Code me the program I've dreamed of. This one's just as unlikely as the last, lol. I've learned some programming skills but I don't have the time to learn more, and I would have to be mentored through creating this program specifically anyway, lol. Some years ago I created a 14-page outline of a music player that I would love - and there isn't a single program out there that even comes CLOSE to having the features I want (multi-genre labeling and filtering without interacting with the actual files' tags, for instance). I run Linux Mint as my main OS and would want anything I use to run on Linux natively.

If you're going the route of mailing me directly (such as for wishes #2 or #6, or if you have a personal copy of something on my Amazon wishlist that you want to send), PM me for my address.

The Durin/Freminet fic has been completed and posted! I find writing oneshots very difficult, so I'm surprised I actually saw the idea I had through to the end. Thankfully, my partner also likes the ship, so they helped me edit/revise it a bit. I'd love to write more Durin ships, but we'll see if I ever get the time...

I also bought the FFXIII series on Steam today. I've been wanting to play the sequels, but it's been sooo long since I've played the first one that I thought I may as well replay it too. I was waiting for the winter sale so I could save some money though lol. My plan for winter break was to get a head start on some cosplans that my partner and I have, so I'll get around to playing them sometime in the coming year.

Speaking of 2026, I was wondering what kind of posts I should do for Fannish 50, and I think I will probably do BL reviews/recs? I mostly read manga, but maybe I'll also do some danmei novels. I have so many of both on my TBR list. But, I'll have to make posts for some of my favorites as well. I found Punks Triangle at the mall today and may have... impusively bought it. I've been wanting a physical copy for forever. This is a great opportunity to reread it and take notes for a post about it.

ME: "Oh boy! It's the end of the year! It's going to be super simple to wrap up everything at work in a timely manner!"

WORK: "lol. lmao even."

Anyway, I've consumed a truly lethal amount of caffeine this week and averaged about three hours of sleep a night, but I think I am actually done with everything that needs to be finished before the end of the year. (In related news, I was grimly mulling over something today, and then I thought, Self, you've averaged three hours of sleep a night this week! You are not in your right mind right now! You don't need to re-evaluate a single thing in your life today! Today is a day for head empty, just vibes!)

Wake Up Dead Man (2025) -- This is a deliberate throwback to a very retro style of murder mystery, and I enjoyed it on the same terms I enjoy Agatha Christie novels (i.e. dumb as hell if you think about it too long, but very satisfying in the moment). It's also a piss-take on a Passion Play, which is fun if you're familiar with the format and usual characters.

Unfortunately, it has a distractingly weird portrayal of American Catholicism, complete with a priest who has apparently inherited the same parish as his grandfather? (Even aside from the priestly family, that kind of appointment would be pretty weird within the ecclesiastical bureaucracy.) And then we have that same priest delivering all these off-the-cuff fire-and-brimstone sermons from the pulpit, which is not...really the vibe in the Catholic liturgical calendar but which can be the vibe in the Wild West of evangelical Christianity. Surprise: director Rian Johnson is not Catholic but was raised in an 80s evangelical household. Yeah, man, me too, but despite that, I'm aware the Venn diagram of Catholic and evangelical institutional cultures does not have a ton of overlap.

Actually, I suspect that Johnson wanted to replicate a very typical kind of English mid-century murder mystery, which necessarily involves the Anglican Church. But there's no way you can transfer a murder mystery set in an Anglican vicarage to the United States; there's literally nothing in the pantheon of U.S. Christian institutions that equates to that specific host of associations. I can see why Catholicism might have seemed like an acceptable substitute at first glance, but the movie is so unnecessarily wrong about such little stuff that it kept breaking my suspension of disbelief.

On the other hand, Josh O'Connor excels in the lead role and nails the very specific personality of every young Catholic priest I've met in my life. So sometimes the movie achieves a moment of real, lived reality, and sometimes it's just lazy and generic and incurious.

Mass Effect (2007, PC) -- Beat it! It took me about 22 hours, and I did pretty much everything. I followed a mostly renegade path, which was unpleasant and sometimes lazily integrated with the game's plot. On the other hand, I liked that the game's writing doubled down on xenophobia and amorality in the grand finale, especially in Anderson's concluding speech about humanity taking control amidst a power vacuum. Gross but appropriate! I sacrificed Ashley at Virmire -- even though I think Ashley's character arc over the whole trilogy is fun and a lot more interesting that the stuff going on with Kaidan. (But, alas, I sacrificed Kaidan during my first playthrough, so I thought it was only fair to sacrifice Ashley this time.) Saved Wrex, of course, as he remains the standout character in the cast. I romanced Liara, somewhat reluctantly. The romances in this game are pretty bad, and I salute my younger player-self's purity of purpose in refusing to romance anyone at all. On the whole, I had a fine time, but Mass Effect has not aged particularly well. Its innovations have all been appropriated and refined in other games (not least among them its own sequel), and so now it just seems kind of clunky and hammy in its execution. I kind of think...Dragon Age is the better Bioware series?

Inscryption (2021, PC) -- After I uninstalled Mass Effect, I did not want to start a new game, but I did want to enter a game-playing fugue state. Enter, stage left: Kaycee's Mod from Inscryption, which is basically an endless version of the Act One card game. It took me 21 failed runs before I managed to beat the first iteration of the game, so everything is clearly going great. As a vehicle for disassociation, sacrificing squirrel cards has entered a pleasantly Tetris-like zone for me.

Busy Busy

The month has certainly gotten away from me- what do you mean Christmas is in a few days?

Thank you to everyone who has sent cards! I have, embarrassingly, completely lost track of things. ^^;; But I have also sent a lot of things... and would feel good about the state of my gifting overall except I have one amazon order from the beginning of the month that hasn't budged!. I suspect next year I will either need to pester people for wishlists at the beginning of November or see if we can skip the 'zon altogether. (Also a few packages out in the void but that's starting to clear up and that's certainly the weather affecting things at this point.)

I have one more day of work left this year, and then nearly two weeks off. I suppose the main thing I need to do is clean/sort/organize. Yet again, not having any clue what I own threatened to bite me in the ass. (Saved! ...by my laziness. I hadn't actually bought the thing I thought I needed but already had.) So, 2026 will be the year of the whole-place inventory and likely clean-out. Maybe I can just start doing a monthly giveaway post?

Finished up RG Exia and put him in the Mangar. Next is a 30MM Horse, which is part of the D&D party that I ordered at Thanksgiving: RG Justice, HG Calibarn, SD Dynames, 30MF Priest, and 30MM Horse. I didn't order a D&D party on purpose! Just... once everyone was in my cart I was just 'lol, this sure is an assortment, or more like a D&D party...'

Neighbor D's memorial service is also today. It's fairly late in the day, so I'm just going to drop by briefly, but I also wouldn't miss it.

Recent Reading: Solo Dance

Last night I wrapped up Solo Dance by Kotomi Li, translated from Japanese by Arthur Morris. This short book is about a young gay Taiwanese woman who struggles with both internal and external homophobia, and eventually moves to Japan looking for understanding.

Queer stories from other countries are always interesting to me and it’s a good reminder that progress has not been even all over the world. Much of the book is pretty depressing, because the protagonist struggled with fitting in even before she realized she was gay, and she has some real struggles. She is battling severe depression for much of the book and at several points, suicidality.

The book is touching in that the protagonist’s struggles feel real and she’s someone who is so close to having positive experience that could change her life for the better, but her luck keeps dropping on the other side each time.

I don’t want to spoil too much about the end, but while I was grateful for the overall tone of the it, it is contrived and not very believable. But I did enjoy the protagonist’s travels leading up to that point. It’s not at all subtle, and it packs a lot more plot into the final handful of chapters than the rest of the book, but it was still sweet to see the protagonist’s perspective shift a little through her engagements with other people.

I’m not sure if it’s the translation or the original prose, but the language is stilted and very emotionally distant. The reader is kept at arm’s length from the protagonist virtually the whole novel, and while we’re often told she’s feeling these intense feelings, I never felt it. It was like reading a clinical report of her feelings, which was disappointing.

This is Li’s first novel, and it reads that way. There’s a lot of heart in it, and I appreciate it for that, but it lacks a lot in technical skill. I would be interested to see more of Li’s future work, when she’s had more time to polish her ability, but I don’t regret taking the time with this one.

But I probably would forget about it 2 weeks into 2026 lol.

Btw, I actually finished P3RE and I'm playing thru EpAi already!
The game's last months are my favorite, so I got too focused and forgot to make diary entries, sorry.
But I will make one summarizing my thoughts on the game later on.
