Wednesday Reading Meme & Books 43 - 45 of 2025

What I Just Finished Reading: Since last Wednesday I have read/finished reading: System Collapse (The Murderbot Diaries) by Martha Wells, The Body in the Garden (A Lily Adler Mystery) by Katharine Schellman, and Martinis and Mayhem (A Murder, She Wrote Mystery) by Donald Bain.

What I am Currently Reading: Water Like a Stone (A Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James Mystery) by Deborah Crombie.

What I Plan to Read Next: Still a variety of library books out and even more on request, so a library book.

Book 43 of 2025: System Collapse (The Murderbot Diaries) (Martha Wells)

This book was so good! spoilers )

So good! I still have one book left because I was forewarned that this one immediately followed Network Effect. I’m obviously giving this one five hearts.

♥♥♥♥♥

Book 44 of 2025: The Body in the Garden (A Lily Adler Mystery) (Katharine Schellman)

I liked this book a lot. spoilers )

I enjoyed this book and have already requested the second in the series from the library. I'm giving this one five hearts.

♥♥♥♥♥

Book 45 of 2025: Martinis & Mayhem (A Murder, She Wrote Mystery) (Donald Bain)

I enjoyed this book (though you know I'll have something to say about it in a future M[F]M post). spoilers )

I'm happy to see that these books are getting better, even though there are still some inconsistencies (within the book and with the show). I'm giving it four hearts.

The Day in Spikedluv (Tuesday, June 17)

My sister A wanted to go out to see mom at 11am; I’m relieving her around 3pm (timing at her request), so I had time to get some shopping and other chores done. I went downtown so I could go to Walmart.

Mom stuff: While at Walmart I picked up some items that mom had requested I get for her eventual convalescence at home; dropped by her house to get her mail; and stopped in at the bank to make sure they had a copy of her POA on file (since she has me signing checks to pay bills while she’s in the hospital). They did not. The process took way longer than I expected; it’s such a rigamarole now. (On the plus side, I got a call after just an hour and a half saying it had been approved, so I’m good to go.)

I passed Sunnycrest, so I stopped in to see if they had those beef sticks for Pip. They did! Just one package, but it’s something.

I did a load of laundry, hit Stewart’s on the way home, baked chicken for the dogs, did the usual amount of hand-washing dishes, and changed kitty litter. (Dear lord, that was a stinky job. My fault because I let it go longer than usual. Lesson learned. Hopefully.)

I started reading a new book and obviously got to visit mom.

Time is warping and I thought today was Wednesday so I took my Trulicity injection a day early. o_O

Temps started out at 59.0(F) and reached 74. At a guess. I hate not being home in the afternoon to check the temp.

Mom Update:

Mom was doing much better today! MUCH better. more )

Throwing a curveball into 2025 by getting back into Bleach.

Skim reading the last arc and all my old feelings are coming back like 'there are plot holes you could drive a truck through and I could write fic about them' and 'Mayuri is very annoying'.

My main feeling is that when people complained about the ending arc because of the pairings or whatever, instead of the sexism and transphobia, they were complaining about the wrong things. I could not care less who Ichigo gets with (and I feel Ichigo also doesn't care that much 😂) but I would have liked fewer scenes where women have to be naked during a fight, you know? ...though on the other hand, as a Renji/Rukia shipper I did win.

I talk a lot about these online arguments where people respond in ways that don’t follow from the original statement, but I think this is a bigger part of life than just online. I think it’s a major issue that would make life easier in a great many ways if it could be solved.

As an example, I’ve been getting in a lot of trouble at work because my flux comments aren’t good enough. I told my coworker today that project managers keep not giving me the information I need to write flux comments. I asked her for an example of the sort of email she sends that PMs respond to. (I wanted to see if there was a more polite phrasing that made PMs want to be helpful.)

She responded with an example of the kind of flux comment she writes, so I could mimic that format to write better comments. I asked how she got the information in the comment. She said the PMs send it to her.

TV: She-Hulk: Attorney at Law - Season 1

I really liked this for the most part. Jen is such a great character, and I love how she reacts to a crisis, to challenges and to icky guys. Nikki, Mallory and Paul were also really fun to watch.

Loved the tone of the show for the most part, a nice mixture between light-hearted and heavy stuff. Though there were some moments that were actually really hard to take because they just hit you in the gut. I actually had to fast-forward through the twist during the gala. It's just his utter horribleness that women have to deal with in real life and I couldn't take it in my entertainment.

I liked the cameos, especially Blonsky was fun. Also, the 4th wall breaking worked for me most of the time even though it did feel a bit random as a part of the show? But hey, Kevin is Glados, good to know.

TV Tuesday: Deja Vu

Laptop-TV combo with DVDs on top and smartphone on the desk

In the past, shows used to create “clip episodes” which were made up of segments of other episodes with a brief wraparound story. This was usually done to save money, extend writing time, or cover for the absence of a lead character.

Is this something you miss? Is there one you've particularly liked? Given currently shorter seasons, are these still being used in any shows you’ve seen?

Two things

Goddammit GMMTV! I really don’t have time to watch another new drama, and you have to go and bait me with this:

This is the thumbnail image of the last episode’s teaser for Off Jumpol’s currently airing drama Break Up Service. I actually watched the first three episodes of this drama. The first one out of general curiosity, the second because Force guest starred in it, and the third, because Drake guest starred in it as a secret lover of a closeted BL actor, and I was intrigued by the plot synopsis for that episode. I found the drama pretty meh in general, and I didn’t really care for the main het romance, so I never watched more. But now I think I’m going to watch the 11th episode and the finale the next week.

And I know it’s a bait, because it’s not a BL drama, and Off’s character has a female love interest, and because OffGun and TayNew are mega popular and sacred fixed ships. 😊 So I know they're not actually going to give us an OffTay kiss. And yet I can’t help but hope. Please, GMMTV, let guys in fixed ships kiss guys other than their ship partner from time to time. Pretty please...

I also forgot to mention in my previous posts that the wonderful person who made English subs for the 1st season of Tengu no Daidokoro, finally finished making subs for the 2nd season, too. Links for the new season are in this tumblr post. I only managed to watch the first three episodes for now, but everything I loved about the 1st season is still here. It’s lovely and cozy, and it makes my heart all warm. 😊

Y'ALL!

My friend yutaan makes amazing paper art and also does commissions a few times a year. In the past, I've been lucky enough to buy some The Untamed minis of Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian and also of Jiang Cheng and they bring me great joy.

And when she opened up this round of commissions I was like, "Wait. What if I got more minis of favorite characters?"

Well, I asked, and she made! And they are as delightful as I thought they would be!

Jane Eyre )

Spock )

And best of all:

Gen and Attolia )

They are in the mail on their way to me and I am very happy!

The Day in Spikedluv (Monday, June 16)

I had plans to get a lot of stuff (including stuff for mom) done in the afternoon after visiting mom, but my sister got out of work later than she thought and I stayed later because the surgeon had come in and so I got none of that stuff done.

I did do a load of laundry, the usual amount of hand-washing dishes, and scooped kitty litter. I read and watched an HGTV program.

I was hungry by the time I left the hospital as I hadn’t had lunch yet, and I didn’t want to wait until I got home to eat. So I went to a place called the Hawkeye Bar & Grill in the Otesaga Hotel and had some very good fish and chips. This was the view from my seat on the patio:

Temps started out at 57.4(F) and reached 81. (According to Pip. I’m not sure whether to believe him, but he actually had a number instead of yesterday when he just said ‘it got hot’.) The whole day was overcast/hazy, for which we should be thankful, I guess, if it really did reach 81.

Mom Update:

Mom was feeling better today, which was a relief. A lot of stuff happened, so I expect this to get long. it did get long )

I think so far I’m liking this game less than Danganronpa, but that’s really only to be expected considering that I like most games less than Danganronpa. It definitely has something to it, and I am really liking my boy Yuma. I am looking forward to playing more!

Sin lives late at night

I'm pretty sleep-deprived at the moment, but the good news is that I met some deadlines.

Emily Henry, Happy Place (2023) -- After secretly breaking off their long engagement, Harriet and Wyn are forced to pretend to be a happy couple after joining their friends on their annual group vacation.

I really enjoyed the first two Emily Henry novels I read, but I low-key hated this one. Why? There's a lot more cliché romance slop at the start -- Dark blond hair, broad shoulders, a mouth improbably soft when compared to the hard lines that make up the rest of his face -- because, I guess, our lovers are already entangled in one another at the novel's start. (In contrast, the first two Henry novels I read followed a friends-to-lovers structure and our narrator-heroines began with much more blasé tones about the romantic leads.) But, also, I couldn't quite ever make the leap of wanting our central couple to reconcile, because they both had great reasons for breaking up. They're such great reasons that the novel eventually discovers that it has painted itself into a corner, and the "solution" it ultimately finds to effect their reunion is weird and unearned and unsatisfying. Harriet's defining character trait is her unwillingness to have frank conversations or ask direct questions, which means that quite a bit of the plot involves people going to ludicrous lengths to have mistaken impressions. I am not generally bothered by plots driven by miscommunication, but Happy Place takes it to such an extreme that even I started getting restless and irritated by it. Also, Harriet's friends borderline suck? Like, this is the friend-group that makes your life worth living? Girl, no.

Terry Pratchett, The Last Continent (1998) -- Rincewind goes Down Under so that Terry Pratchett can indulge in references to 1980s Australian cinema.

This book has the reputation of being one of the Bad Discworld Novels, and it lives up to that reputation on this read. (Or re-read? I am almost sure I read this book as a child, but I have zero memory of it.) Even aside from the belabored Australia jokes, it's very boring.

Blue Prince (2025, PC) -- My Blue Prince sicko journey continues. I've opened half of the doors in the basement and just visited an old train station. I think I liked the story better when I misunderstood the motivations of Simon's mother.
