support ramblings
I'm a little into Chapter 7 on my Lions run, aiming to get all the available paralogues out of the way before the story battle thanks to my professor level being maxed out again. Most of my units are pretty overleveled, but hey, that's NG+ for you. ^^;
Have a few assorted thoughts on a few assorted supports I've gotten recently, before I get another big pile of them to read!
-
I've just recruited Shamir and Catherine (one good thing about being overleveled is that I can get them earlier!) and while I've only seen their C-rank so far, I can already see the appeal of the ship. It's "opposites attract" done right, if you ask me. I've actually already got enough support points between them to see their B-rank, butI've just got one more battle to do on my current free day before I can check it out oops, turns out it's locked til later in the game. What also doesn't hurt is that Shamir herself is starting to grow on me, after I never used her outside of her own paralogue last time; I still don't intend on really using most if any of the faculty units this time, but at least my maxed-out professor level will let me rotate adjutants and share more meals to build their supports with people. :3
Ashe/Felix C was quite amusing. Felix goes on about how chivalry is digusting and friendship is for losers and whatnot, but then Ashe is basically like "aww, look at this big tsundere, just like the knight in my book!". I hope their B-rank delivers!
Meanwhile, I just think Sylvain/Felix is merely okay as of their B-rank. Their supports aren't bad by any means and I can see the appeal of the ship -- they're childhood friends, they have a history together, they're used to each other's bullshit -- but it frankly doesn't do anything for me. There's a chance that the childhood promise stuff they have going on in their A-ranks could sell me on the ship, but I doubt it somehow. We'll see.
On the other hand, Sylvain/Dedue B is great and I might even ship it a little now. They're such an underrated pair either way. Dedue trying to tell off people who talk shit about Sylvain (well, worse shit than usual) is cute, and I love that he appreciates Sylvain seeing him as human and wants others to see Sylvain as human in turn.
I've also gotten Dimitri/Dedue's B-rank recently, which was a pretty good one. Dimitri stands up to racist knights, Dedue briefly admits he finds much of Faerghus abhorrent, and it turns out it's not just Dedue who feels he owes his life to Dimitri; Dimitri also thinks he owes Dedue because he feels guilty about not being able to prevent what happened to the people of Duscur despite knowing they were innocent. Knowing that both boys feel like they owe the other help to take a bit of the edge off the inequality in their relationship, even if it's pretty unhealthy on both ends -- not that I have anything against unhealthy ships, as anyone who knows my fandom tastes well enough should know!
I do like Dimitri/Dedue well enough, even if I prefer Dimitri with Marianne and Dedue with Mercedes at this point, but my feelings on it are a tad more mixed than I expected. I can't help wondering if Dedue's always going to be in the mindset of "I am His Highness's shield and vassal" around Dimitri despite the latter wanting a more equal friendship between them, and until I get their A-rank (God I hope I've saved Dedue...) it remains to be seen how well Dimitri can knock down that wall. =/ I guess ultimately I just wish Dedue liked himself more, because he does have a right to have friends and stand by Dimitri's side no matter what any racist pricks have to say.
Then there's Annette/Mercedes B. Honestly, the end of that B-rank annoyed me. Mercie gets mad at Annette and they have a falling out because... Annette was trying to protect her from an unsavoury dude. I just thought their argument was really badly written.
If the reason Mercie got mad was because her friend was potentially putting herself in needless danger by standing up to the rogue*, then that would've been absolutely fine and perfectly believable for her character (she does hate to see anyone she cares about in trouble); but having her go "that wasn't like you, it's like I don't know you anymore" was really dumb and over the top, and her accusing Annette of blaming her was so uncharacteristically petty coming from Mercie of all people. When is she ever that petty anywhere else?!
I think the problem with this support is that the writers were forcing things to fit a particular theme (in this case, "do we stay the same people over time?") even if that involved twisting established characterisation. I do kind of appreciate the attempt to add some conflict to Annette and Mercie's interactions, as a whole support chain about Soft Girlfriends Going Shopping Together would've gotten very dull very quickly (not to say their C-rank wasn't nice or cute; I just wouldn't necessarily want two more entire conversations of the same thing), but I do wish that conflict was better written and didn't make Mercie borderline OOC.
It's kind of a shame, because otherwise Annette boldly defending Mercie might've had me nicely on board with the ship.
*For all I know, this angle could still come up in their A-rank, so there's a chance for this support chain to be redeemed in my eyes...

Let's do a paralogue and see what more supports I've unlocked after that, and then I ought to prioritise non-FE things for a while...

(The nice thing about Three Houses' supports are that they actually resolve things and the characters explain stuff. Even chains that only end at B rank manage to tell a good story thread in my book. Though that doesn't stop some moments from making me eyeroll or wanna smack a character. Like in Felix and Ingrid's B rank.)
I love how Ashe is so undeterred by Felix's crankiness and insults, too. He's no pushover but he sees the good in people even when they're jerks or don't think very highly of themselves.

(The overall quality of this game's supports does tend to be high, I agree! And just because some chains end at B doesn't mean they can't also be very good in their own right, though there are some that I wish went up to A anyway.
Why can't Ingrid and Mercedes marry each other? D:)I've seen a few screenshots from Felix/Ingrid B, and ugh, I'm not looking forward to continuing that chain. Damn it, Felix. =/ It's a pity it ends up going that way, because I thought their C-rank was surprisingly cute.

I had higher hopes for that chain since I imagined they'd at least touch on Glen and how his loss impacted them both. But nope, he has to be a big jerk at her.
