I'm now on Chapter 4's story battle in my Deer run, and when I spend my battle weekends catching up people's levels on top of doing quests, it means I've gotten a lot more supports since last time! At least I've got a decent feel for all the Deer now. :3

-

To start with one I'd already done last time but didn't think to comment on before: Hilda/Ferdinand C and C+ involve him recognising that she likes to fob her work off on other people, only for her to trick him into doing her work for her anyway. Reminds me of when I used to see Ferdie as an endearingly mockable dumbass early on in my CF run. ^^; At this point, though, it ain't my favourite chain for either of them.

Byleth/Constance C is pretty funny. I swear she's got him whipped, or at least she's trying!

I still don't like Linhardt/Lysithea C. Not only does he call her a test subject to her face (which I thought was horribly dehumanising when I originally got this support in CF, to say nothing of what kinds of bad memories it could've brought back for her considering her past) but he's so pushy and invasive with his questions about her Crests, only to then act like she's the rude one for not giving him the knowledge he wants! Honestly, he's a self-centred jackass to her, and I know from my CF run that their B isn't much if any better. (I didn't get their A before, but it'll have to really blow me away to make up for the C and B.) It's little wonder I was so nervous about his Hapi and Marianne supports going into this run, which makes me all the more thankful he hasn't come across as nearly so much of an asshole to those two so far.

I did the Leonie/Lysithea supports before in CF, but I'd mostly forgotten what they were like. It's a shame that I did, because their C is actually fairly cute.

Come to think of it, I've seen more than a few people say from early on that Lysithea is a huge jerk to people (though they tend to phrase it with more... gendered insults) but funnily enough, in the supports I got with her in CF she was either not bad at all or pretty justified in being pissed at the other person (case in point for the latter: Linny). Guess it just goes to show what different impressions people get from a character depending on the supports they see...

Hilda/Leonie C gives some details about Leonie's necklace from Jeralt, plus it shows Hilda's interest in accessories and knowledge of how to take care of them. Hilda sure is kinda judgemental of Leonie's necklace for not being cute and girly, though!

Lorenz/Leonie C... sure involves a personality clash. ^^; The pompous nobleman is an especially pompous git when interacting with a commoner who's asking him to *gasp!* get his hands dirty spiffing up weapons! She's good at not taking his shit, though, and I feel like this chain could potentially be decently fun. (On a side note, I'm a bit surprised he hasn't been sexist to her so far, considering his classism is very much on show here.)

Claude/Raphael C has Raph being a well-intentioned guy who's happy to help people he comes across who look like they could do with it, but he sure ended up missing the point of food shopping while he was at it!

Ignatz/Raphael C is a good one, giving us shared backstory and lots of guilt and self-hate on Iggy's part. I'm already having trouble imagining a simple guy like Raph being the type to hold any grudge against him, though? I'll have to see the rest of this one, plus their paralogue later.

Claude/Ignatz C involves ponderings about the Goddess. I like Claude's comments on Ignatz talking about how the Goddess is glorified in texts and such, even if it did simply turn out Iggy is besotted with his mental image of her.

Raphael/Leonie C is a really nice one, and I think I ship it already. 'Nuff said. :D

Balthus/Constance C has the two of them out in the sun, with all that implies for Coco's behaviour, and so we have what's apparently a reversal of how they normally interact with one another. (And Gatekeeper-kun briefly shows up as well, of course.) I kind of hope their later supports will have fun two-sided squabbling and that they might touch on Coco's hidden talent in brawling in some way, but I'll wait and see what they do turn out to be like. Also, fun fact about these two: there are absolutely no meals in the dining hall that they both consider to be favourites.

Between that and Hapi/Balthus C, I now have every C-rank between the Wolves! Hapi's still my favourite, but at this point I think Yuri gets the best dynamics with people. He hasn't had a single bad support yet!

Linhardt/Ferdinand C is still amusing, what with Linny making fun of Ferdie in his own way and the fact he's doing so going right over Ferdie's head.

Lorenz/Ferdinand C is so, so gay, especially for a chain that'll only go to B. They're so besotted with each other and especially each other's tea. ^^; Get a room, you two!

Something that Leonie/Marianne C made me really appreciate about Marianne's writing is that her shyness and low self-esteem are actually flaws, not cutesy moe traits. Some characters do get irritated by her sheer negativity, like Leonie by the end of this support, and they're not demonised for it. It's a good way of writing a woobie character without being obnoxiously cloying about it.

Leonie herself is a very practical person, and I'm not seeing why people think she has no character outside of being a Jeralt fangirl. She doesn't even bring him up that much when she's not specifically talking to Byleth!

Lorenz/Raphael C isn't bad considering I wasn't expecting much from it. LOL at making fun of Lorenz's skinniness, and on a nicer note, I like that Raph isn't totally oblivious to Lorenz's ambitions.

I actually have a bit of a soft spot for Raphael by this point. He's quite gimmicky and he ain't the most complex character, but he's a nice and good-natured dude and he's got a straightforward way of looking at things that reminds me of what I like about Caspar.

Lorenz/Ignatz C is nice. Lorenz seems fond of Iggy and is clearly willing to accomodate him; it's just too bad that Iggy can't yet admit to the fact he doesn't actually want to be a knight.

Hilda/Lysithea C is cute and maybe even a bit gay. On the other hand, Hilda/Raphael C has her policing his birthday present to his sister because ~girls want cute things~, despite the fact she doesn't even know her at all; for all she knows, the little sis might be the kind of person who likes necklaces with wolf fangs and boar tusks on them! Can she not imagine other girls having different tastes to her or something? =/

I'm iffy on Hilda, to be honest. She seems pretty self-centred, and her laziness comes across as worse than Linny's because at least he doesn't go out of his way to shove work off on other people. I'm not looking forward to her Cyril supports, either, based on what I've heard about them. All that said, though, I want to see more of her Lorenz and Marianne supports, and I at least like her better than Felix!

With Ignatz/Lysithea C, I now see why people call her a jerk. Was she taking something out on him? I would simply chalk it up to her being prickly about people lecturing her like she's a kid, though poor Iggy wasn't even being patronising, but she goes off on him over his appearance even before that... anyway, at this point at least, it's not the best ship for either of them by any means.

Raphael/Marianne C is quite lighthearted for a Marianne support, which I suppose is what happens when Raphael is her conversation partner. He spots her talking birdie when trying to check in on her, and she denies it by saying the bird happened to be talking human.

Claude/Marianne C shows a bit of promise. Her cageyness about her past gets him interested in her, and what does Claude enjoy more than unearthing secrets?

Claude/Leonie C is another decent one. She appreciates that he's not the kind of noble who acts like he's better than other people, and he likes how frank she is.

I'm so glad Claude has fun C-ranks with his housemates, by the way. It's quite refreshing after my AM run. >>;

Finally, there's Lorenz/Marianne C+. I'm going to assume their later supports are where the chain gets good, because at this point, I'm not sold on it. He's basically looking at her as a project to work on so he can bring out her ~noble beauty~, and all I can think is "she never asked you".

-

With that, the only C-ranks within the Deer that I'm missing are Byleth/Raphael, Lorenz/Lysithea, Raphael/Lysithea and Hilda/Ignatz. Hopefully I'll get those by the time I finish this chapter -- or if I don't, then a few meals on the next free day ought to do the trick!

Linhardt/Lysithea's A support was okay compared to the others, but I mostly did it to fill my support log and I still far prefer them both with other people.

I'm not surprised people call Lysithea a jerk or gendered insults, honestly. :/ They do the same thing with Nah in Awakening because some of her supports DO have her being a huge brat to people (or worse) but they base their entire opinion on those chains and ignore the ones where she's actually quite sweet and thoughtful, or just being playful even if she comes on too strong.

Lorenz is surprisingly non-sexist considering he's Mr. Waifu-Hunter. He's an equal opportunity snob.

The first time I got Raphael/Ignatz C support I thought Ignatz was just afraid of Raphael, then the whole "it's my fault your parents died" bomb dropped and it got SAD.

And I shipped Raphael/Leonie quite fast when I got their first support. <3

LORENZ/FERDINAND IS SO FUCKING SUGGESTIVE, WHY DIDN'T THEY HAVE AN A SUPPORT OR EVEN A PLATONIC ENDING XD I came away shipping the hell out of those two, they have such a fun dynamic. tbh I prefer it to Ferdiebert even if I've got nothing against that one.

People turned on Leonie because of her Byleth supports and she's memed as a Jeralt fangirl, but there's so much to her. Her thrifty ways, treasuring what she has, trying to help people? And she even apologizes for getting cranky at Byleth.

Raphael is quite gimmicky, but there's a lot of heart in those gimmicks. He eats a lot because he trains a lot, and he trains a lot because he has family at home he wants to protect. He's not that bright, but he wants to improve on it, and he genuinely cares for his classmates.

Hilda gets better as the story and her supports go on. She's a lot like Serra and Severa, they mean well but they're also short-sighted and selfish and are locked into wanting their own way. Cyril/Hilda is actually one of my least favorite support sets for them both, even if their ending is surprisingly cute. Plus Claude points out that Hilda IS coddled a lot by her father and brother...

Lorenz/Marianne gets better after the B support, after he finally has some character development. You may not come away loving it, but suffice it to say this "Imma make her my project" attitude doesn't last.

Claude is such a breath of fresh air after Dimitri and even Edelgard. Edelgard is so serious all the time, and Dimitri has that darkness lurking within. But Claude tries to keep things chill. He can be serious, yeah, but he's basically "someone's gotta lighten things up around here."

And yes, Marianne is a shy woobie, but it cripples her ability to really talk to people and frustrates them. :/ I like the way her supports handle it.

Apparently she was super popular until her supports with Byleth happened and people decided she was a bitch. Because, you know, maybe since she doesn't know WHY Byleth seems so emotionless, she mistook it for lack of appreciation. (Face it, not everyone's going to see an emotionless person and immediately think "gee, maybe it's the fault of the crest stone implanted in their heart").

LOL, true. I forgot how fun her Ferdie supports could be, and she and Dorothea are looking promising. (I'm hooking them up in my next game.) Most of Dimitri's supports start off tepid due to his overall nature, they don't start to REALLY shine until the next rank. (Though I thought his C support with Marianne was really sweet from the get-go, and I loved his firm but kind concern for Dedue's low self-image in theirs.)

I also happen to like how a good portion of the beginning of the Golden Deer route is Claude going "poison sounds fun" and Byleth going CLAUDE NO. When your house leader trying to make people sick is the worst of your problems it's kind of refreshing imo.

You know, I think I was so beelined focused on having my Byleth marry Raphael that I didn't properly appreciate the potential in Raphael/Leonie. I'll have to give that one another look over.
