Reading Wrap-up 2/26

I actually didn't read all that much in February, but here are the books I *did* finish.

Setterfield, Diane: The Thirteenth Tale. Atria Books. 2006.
I loved "A River's Tale" a few years back, so I assumed this novel would be a safe bet. On the surface it circles around the same topics as "A River's Tale": What is fiction? And what is reality in relation to fiction? Does reality even exist or will everything that filters into our consciousness per default turn into fiction? So, on the surface level interesting, especially since it's a book about books / a book about reading and don't we all love those? But I found the plot to be absolutely outlandish and the whole novel rather heavy-handed. I can't say that I was bored, but I had high hopes for this one and Setterfield didn't quite deliver.

Edelbauer, Raphaela: Die Inkommensurablen. Klett-Cotta. 2023. (German)
This is a novel set in Vienna on the literal eve of WWI. It follows three friends as they spend they night and witness how the war breaks out. The vibes of this book are amazing. The Viennese slang is spot-on. (I wouldn't expect this to be translated into English anytime soon and if it is I can't see how a translation could hope to emulate the sound of this book.) Edelbauer more than delivers on the Austrian vibe and on the topics and ideas that were discussed at that point in time. I didn't connect with her characters all the much and all the esoteric talk about shared dreams went right over my head. But the rest was fantastic.

Kay, Adam: This is going to hurt. Picador. 2017.
Read for research and on that front it delivered. Other than that I think it's very specific to its time and place. If you don't live in GB you will have to live with the fact that this book clearly was not written for you. You'll still find some "funny" medical anecdotes in this. So if that's what you're looking for, go ahead and read this. (I'd advise to stay clear if you're pregnant or ever plan on being pregnant.)

Babb, Sanora: Whose Names Are Unknown. University of Oklahoma Press. 2006.
This novel tackles the same topics Steinbeck talks about in "The Grapes of Wrath" (and maybe you remember that I didn't like that book at all). The plot points are very similar - you have a family in the Oklahoma Panhandle that has to deal with continuous crop failure and that then goes to California and lives in a refugee camp. "Whose Names are Unknown" isn't a stellar novel either, but I like numerous things a lot better than in "The Grapes of Wrath": Babb clearly knows what she tallks about. Her descriptions of farm life and a farmer's relationship with his animals is spot-on and rings very true. Also, in contrast to Steinbeck she tells us things and then allows us to come to our own conclusions. You re actually invited to think for yourself in this one. Steinbeck was constantly trying to drive home his own political views via his storytelling. Even if you don't end up reading this novel, have a look at the publication history. It's highly fascinating!

chronological big life updates

1. Wax Sent to Customer Service Jail

Yesterday I asked [personal profile] waxjism, "Hey, don't you want to make a dreamwidth update about being sent back to jail?"

"Nope," she said.

Wax has been feeling sick (?) since we both had a nervous breakdown a year ago last September after losing two cats. She finally went to the doctor a month and a half ago and had a bunch of bloodtests but they found nothing and, I gather, said the next step is to check whether it's hormones or something and she needs to see a different doctor (a gynecologist, maybe?). But they didn't just give her a referral - apparently she has to call back to ask about how to get a referral, or what, because she doesn't actually know how to get that next appointment. Annnnnd she hasn't accumulated enough spoons again yet to do that (including when she had a week of vacation a few weeks ago).

Feeling under the weather has snowballed into near-total burnout and exhaustion and she has been having trouble focusing at work, and as a result her boss called her and revoked her Work From Home privileges, as of two weeks back. She's going back to the saltmines (the customer service mines) every day, and as a result she's even more tired the rest of the time.

On the plus side, it's good for her mental health to leave the house and have a schedule that makes her walk around and breathe fresh air everyday. Not sure if it's as good for her as the extra exhaustion is bad though.

2. My Dad Hospitalized for Copious Hallucination

My dad (69), a quadriplegic wheelchair user who has been recovering from a series of antibiotic resistant infections and other complications and in and out of the hospital constantly for like a year, has a sudden, brand-new, unusual problem. Friday he apparently woke up feeling odd and started hallucinating, at first things like a pool of water on the table or a black webbing on his own hand, then a lizard under the chair and a cat jumping onto the ceiling; they took him to the ER, and the hallucinations got more vivid and numerous very quickly. He was seeing people and animals in the ER and asking my mom if there were really kittens on the floor. By Saturday he was talking to my favorite aunt and uncle (who weren't there) most of the day and by the end of Saturday he was no longer aware that he was in the hospital. My dad has no mental disorders except anxiety, and the doctors were ruling out various kinds of dementia at first, but they thought it was likely to be something acute. He was having urine tests and x-rays and EEGs yesterday, and being interviewed by various doctors. He spent the early part of Sunday keeping my mom awake talking to hallucinated people and asking her to interact with things that weren't there (some tax paperwork on the table he said he had to file, a book he said he saw, stools and tables he wanted her to move); later he was in the house I grew up in (they moved out something like ten years ago), my grandparents' house (sold almost ten years ago), a restaurant, and imaginary places; and he had a brief spell not recognizing my mom, but he remembered who she was a minute later. The psychiatrists were saying they thought it was probably not neurological, and might be metabolic. He seems to be in less danger than he was at several points last year, but this is very stressful for my mom and sister. They both seem scared. I wish I could go there. My parents live with my sister in Louisiana.

3. Loss of One Bunny.

Rowan died Saturday night, fairly suddenly, we think basically of old age. 10 years is thought to be the maximum life span of our type of bunny, and they're 10 years and 4 months right now, but of the two, Japp has been sick several times and Rowan's never had a single health scare and has also been much more active, playful, and happy in recent years. He only seemed sick on Saturday, but he had eaten his most recent meal (which is usually the first sign of danger for ailing bunnies). I've been trying all morning to get in touch with the vet to take him to get cremated: I got up early to call them before Wax left for work with the car, but couldn't get through (and still can't). I will make a separate memorial post about him, but I have to collect pictures first. It's very sad, but we're relieved that it was quick and he didn't seem to suffer and that he had a long happy life and basically died at 101. Also relieved that he was the one to die first: he was much more clingy to Japp, who has always been more independent and not particularly sociable. I am less worried about Japp getting lonely.

I think it’s INCREDIBLY hilarious that the last time I made a post here was February 1st. xD Here I am again on March 1st, and another month starts anew.

I’ve been spending a lot more time offline, tbh. Been putting my phone on Do Not Disturb more than usual, and some weekends I don’t even pick it up at all. xD I don’t think it’s burnout per se, but definitely in a bit of a “just survive the day” type mood and finding the strength to put one foot in front of the other in more productive ways that don’t involve doomscrolling.

That’s also caused me to take a step back from my creative outlets, but I wanna hopefully start writing again soon, especially with the last round of OC x Canon Week on the horizon. ; o; Also wanna try to revive my Fannish 50 posts since I kinda miss those? Maybe? We’ll see. xD

I miss writing and wanna write more, so we’ll start there and see where it all goes.

Anyways, here’s a pretty cool album I got with the most recent Bandcamp Friday extravaganza! Hope you enjoy. ❤️

It's been a while since my last update, but I just haven't been in the mood to sit down and write anything that isn't my fic. I still haven't finished it, but I posted the first chapter last week, and somehow my brain feels like I can finally do other things now. Brains...

I've also had a couple of busy weekends. Two weeks ago, I went to the Chinese Embassy's New Year event in the capital, and this past weekend I volunteered at Citrus Con. Oh, and both my computer and the kid's died. Mine could be saved, fortunately... which is why I'm writing this now.

Anyway, I'm alive and hopefully I'll be able to post a proper update soon :)

I saw some videos yesterday that said, "hey here's some stuff you can do to make life feel more manageable."

1 - take action

it doesn't have to be big or meaningful, just deliberate, like deep breathing or washing the dishes. it's okay to choose to be a witness if you have that capacity. it's also beneficial to recognize what you can control and what you can't. "just because you can't do everything doesn't mean you can't do anything."

2 - be persistent

little things are always valuable, and their effect grows every time they're repeated. maybe it doesn't mean much today, but after you've done it for a hundred days, you'll be different and that matters. "meditation is like walking in a mist. you may not feel anything, but if you keep it up, eventually you'll get wet."

extra note: number of repetitions can have a bigger impact than total volume. doing something for a short time over and over again may produce more change than doing something for a long time once. "if someone receives a single rose every day for 12 days, surely it has more impact than receiving a dozen roses once."

3 - practice gratitude

write down the good things, no matter how small. the point is to shift focus from what you can't do or have, to what you can or do. "what you give your attention to grows."

the other video said "balance doesn't happen by itself." And I was like, "well it does, that's the nature of equilibrium, it's just not necessarily the balance you want." so keep moving. that's how we figure out, not just how to create a balanced state, but how to maintain it.

...also, these were originally language-learning tips. I find them broadly relevant. "the way you do anything is the way you do everything."

I'm beginning to wonder what is wrong with me. I thought my Overlook story was formatted. It wasn't. I thought This Little Piggy story had a good ending (a story I have sent out in the past) and it literally trails off. I thought my test for tuesday was done and I just needed to clean it up. I was wrong. Is this part of worsening ADHD? Is this part of the depression? Me being overworked? I am falling further and further behind and I don't like any part of it.

But let's set that aside for now. I wanted to talk about writing monsters. I want to take my story Sharp Little Teeth and expand it into a novella. I think there is something in i t worth saving. It's a bit long for most open calls and at the end of the day, the ending is rushed just to fit it under 8k. There is enough to it to develop to three times its size. A gay mobster in 1947, his lavender marriage to a lady doctor, their forced exile from Boston to Las Vegas, some monster killing people building the new casino experiment.

I need to do more research into Vegas (collecting books now) but that's not my issue. I have used folklore to create the monster. I didn't find any colonizer monsters that fit what I needed, just some big foot knock offs. there is something in Paiute lore that does work and that's what I went for at the time (with only weeks to do this)

I did have the Native American character come up with how to get rid of them but still it feels like it's toeing the line of white savior and mystic native tokenism. I don't want either of those things obviously. So I was thinking I can use the thing from legend but it's not that. It's not the crybaby water things either. While they're working it out, more die.

But that means I have to make a monster. I know I want to keep the small child-like stature of them and of course the titular sharp little teeth but where do I go from there? I don't know yet but I need to think abou that. Might be time look at desert animals and go from there.

1. This morning we walked to a new (in our area; I guess they have a couple other locations in LA) cafe that is queer owned and run. They had a really good breakfast burrito, mid donut, and decent matcha latte. It's a little far for a casual walk for Carla, so I'm not sure how often we'd go, but I'm glad to try it out. We also stopped at the Italian deli on the way home and got sandwiches for lunch.

2. Even though our Japan trip will be longer than last time, I want to pack lighter, at least in some regards. I've also been thinking about getting a crossbody bag to use on a daily basis while there instead of my little backpack I use at Disneyland, because the backpack hurts my back between my shoulderblades, and I don't have that issue with a crossbody bag. So first I was thinking about just getting a smallish bag to replace the little backpack, and then was thinking about getting a slightly bigger bag to use on the plane so it could fit my ipad (the largest item I'd want on the plane) because the laptop bag I used last time was such overkill (just used it because it was something we already had at home). But after looking at bags, I found one that I think would be good to use on a daily basis and would be big enough for the flight. It arrived today and I tried it out and my ipad fits, and everything I'd want to have accessible on the plane fits without being overloaded, and it seems comfortable for daily use! I've also decided to use the smaller suitcase backpack that Carla recently got for my main bag, and she'll use one of the bigger bags we both used last time.

3. Finished up a puzzle today. This is the second side of the double sided Disney cats/dogs puzzle that I did a couple months ago.

4. After skipping a few months of flea prevention medication for the cats during the winter, we decided to start them on it again this month and I was able to get all five cats in one day. Usually Gemma is so suspicious that if I don't get her first, it might take a few days before she lowers her guard enough that I can get her.

The little nerd show was good. Never really busy, but steady-ish. Mostly a Pokemon/card-heavy group, didn't move any of my animanga stuff, but sold a few TFs and some random other things. Sold video games, and at the end another vendor offered me half of what I had marked on my 'expensive' PS1 games which was still way more than double? triple? what I'd paid and I said "sure!" because, like, they are out of my sale box and I have cash in hand. Next show is in April and I suppose I'll be best served by picking out more games that I'm never going to play. (Also the vendor beside us kept coming over and looking at a couple of random PSP games but said he hadn't done well enough to justify buying them. He had Pokemon plushies and I said I'd trade for a couple of cool critters. I got a Pikachu and some sort of mushroom with tentacles that made me laugh.)

It's March, so I have communities to do things with and promote in general... I have a lot of stuff to do in general. While it is still chilly at the moment, the end of the week is supposed to be impressively warm and I will be able to hopefully do a quick garage-clean. Yay!

I suppose this week, if it's as quiet as it's looking like it might be, I can work on my Redacted III contest entry. That should be easy-ish to do? Hopefully? Just need to find momentum...

So March! The full moon is in two days, which means the lantern festival and the year of the horse starts for real. This is definitely going to be the year I practice speaking!

I took the SuperChinese placement test, and here is how I interpreted my results.
Pronunciation: good
Vocabulary: okay
Reading speed: okay
Grammar: poor, very poor

A basic level of grammar is necessary to make sentences that communicate meaning, and I think I got that far and then stopped paying attention, or focused on other things, like comprehension. If I can use SuperChinese to improve my grammar, I'm in. I want to share abstract stories, not only communicate about tangible experiences.

It's funny that speaking practice is both so encouraging and so humbling: my sentences are certainly understandable (yay!) but they aren't correct (...yeah).

Work/life overall: Usually before a seasonal crunch starts at Dayjob I think to post something to the effect of "I'm about to be swamped, so while I'll probably/hopefully manage to keep up with reading posts, commenting will probably be mostly nonexistent, etc. etc.", and sometimes I feel a bit silly about it because I'm not as active a commenter as I'd like anyway and sometimes the crunch isn't that bad, and probably most people reading this already know that anyway...but I have some newer mutuals here now and I didn't think to post it, and friends, this crunch is CRUNCHY. Ohboy.

Media intake: LOL. (Okay, I did actually read a couple volumes of manga last night, and I did show ep. 1 of Heated Rivalry to [personal profile] scruloose last weekend. But I think that's it.)

Weather: We did get lots of snow early in the week, but somehow yet again didn't lose power. No complaints!

Cats: Last week both of the blues had birthdays! Yona turned four on Tuesday and Sinha turned five yesterday. (It would be very convenient to have a pic of the two of them together that'd make a good idea, but the odds of that ever happening are not remotely good. Have an icon of baby!Yona.)

March really is coming in like a lion! February was long and cold, but as March drew near the snow turned into fog, and today a wild wind has blown the fog into scattered clouds. It was a wonderful day for my first bike ride since July - the ebike is in good shape, fortunately, it just needed a little wash! I've really missed biking.

One of many things I've missed since my chronic illness flared up and I lost my hold of "normal" during a summer and fall of hospital stays and emergency surgeries... I'm still on part time sick leave, still waiting for another surgery. But then perhaps I can go back to commuting by bike and going for slow runs and making plans for things I can be reasonably sure of actually getting to do!

Writing here - we'll see if that becomes part of that new normal I am dreaming of. For now, a little post. Maybe one with sections?

Fandom Trumps Hate
I am doing something very exciting (and a little scary) for the first time ever, and offering to vid almost anything (within limits) over here for [community profile] fandomtrumpshate. Bidding opens soon and I am about equally nervous about nobody bidding on my offer, and about fulfilling the offer! (I am confident in my abilities, but my anxiety does not care.) Feel free to contact me through the details in the post or right here in the comments if you've got any questions about the offer!

Currently Watching
...I was gonna start with a few things I enjoyed in the past few months, but that got overwhelming. And since I'm on part time sick leave under doctor's orders to rest up as much as possible, I've been watching TV on my own - also while embroidering.

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo is an anime from 2004 that I watched back then. I remembered the fascinating animation style, using patterns and textures instead of flat colors, but I had forgotten how extremely, canonically queer it is. Having a slow rewatch and really enjoying the whole experience.

Mushishi is available for free on YouTube, thanks to Kodansha! IF, of course, you live in an "English Speaking Country". I do not, but I have my ways... It's a slow rewatch, which is really perfect for enjoying it properly. Which I also do through giffing it! I decided to do 10 gifs for each episode. So far I've done the first ten. I'm putting them all in the tag 10xmushishi on my Tumblr. Eventually I think there are going to be episodes I've never seen, which is going to be fun (and not too heartbreaking, I hope).

Chef & My Fridge is what Skuld and I have been watching...basically for a month straight? It started with us both getting really into the second season of Culinary Class Wars, having been really into S1 as well (it was my comfort show when I was hospitalized in December 2024). Then we ran out of that, and Netflix was like "Hey... do you wanna see more of chefs who have been on CCW? We've got a bunch here in this variety show!" So we checked out the variety show and got hooked because it's delightful. Now we're caught up with the almost 60 episodes (each over an hour long) and it'll be fun to have it to look forward to, but it would be even more fun if Netflix could make the 254 episode back catalogue from 2014-2019 available too... (I have my ways but the ways did not have subs for all the episodes, alas.)

I loved Sell Your Haunted House so much that I vidded it after watching it in 2023. Now I'm using it to introduce a friend to Kdrama, and it's worked fantastically well - we watched 4 of the 16 episodes just on Friday night and Saturday before she went back home. It's got so much I love, including great characters, a canonically gen (but easy to ship) M/F friendship, lots of h/c, an intriguing plot, found family, and a great sense of humor.

And we just started a new-to-us show that is not a reality competition or variety show! Knight Flower, which I got curious about after seeing requests for in Festivids letter, and decided we needed to check out after watching marah_sarie's vid for it. I like the concept so far, and love Lee Hanee, so I'm confident it'll be a good watch!
