mikogalatea: Chiaki from Dangan Ronpa 2, wearing a sailor uniform and casually holding a PS2 controller in one hand. ([DR2] Chiaki)
Winter 2022 anime I'm checking out, with the days they air in GMT time for my own reference:

*Tokyo 24th Ward (Wednesdays)
*Sasaki and Miyano (Sundays)
*Tribe Nine (Mondays)
*Sabikui Bisco (Mondays)
*Case Study of Vanitas second cour (Fridays)

It's a much smaller list this time, as I've found it's pointless putting too many shows on my plate at once in a season when I never end up committing to all or even most of them while they're airing. ^^; Five shows that are decently spread out in the week should be more manageable, though.
mikogalatea: Aoi and Sakura from Dangan Ronpa, hanging out in the school cafeteria. Sakura has the world's smallest cup of tea in her hands. ([DR1] Aoi/Sakura)
So I hear 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is coming to the Switch next April? That's awesome news. I've always thought it looked like such a cool and interesting game and that it's a pity I don't have a PS4 to play it on; at least now it'll be on a console I do have in a few months.

In the meantime, I can feel myself slowly edging back into Dangan Ronpa, both thanks to HDRS coming out in English at the end of this week and because I'm super interested in Kodaka's upcoming projects Tribe Nine and Enigma Archives: Rain Code.
mikogalatea: Millie from Star Ocean 1, looking surprised. ([SO1] Millie; hwa?!)
I just found out there's a Star Ocean 6 coming out next year.

... I wish I had a PS4.
mikogalatea: Mami from Madoka Magica, smiling slightly while brushing one of her pigtails back. ([MadoMagi] Mami)
I originally wasn't going to do this because it started to feel pointless last time, bur since it does make it easier for me to keep track of what to look out for when I list it out, here's my list of Autumn 2021 anime I want to at least check out the first episode of! This time I'm also adding the days they air on their respective streaming sites (GMT, so might not be the same days for other timezones) for my own reference:

*86 second cour (Saturdays)
*Digimon Ghost Game (Sunday mornings)
*Rumble Garanndoll (Mondays)
*AMAIM Warrior at the Borderline (Mondays)
*MUTEKING THE Dancing HERO (Saturdays)
*Pride of Orange (Wednesdays)
*Selection Project (Fridays)
*takt op.Destiny (Tuesdays)
*Visual Prison (Fridays)

Quite a lot this time, though oddly enough, it's still one shorter than my list from last season. I only stuck with four out of ten Summer '21 shows and put two or three on a pile to try watching another time, so it might be interesting to see how many Autumn '21 shows make the cut for me...

fun things

mikogalatea: Shuuichi and Kokichi from Dangan Ronpa V3, drawn in a cute cartoony artstyle. ([DRV3] Shuuichi/Kokichi)
Cool things to look forward to next year that got announced or received updates recently:

Pokémon Legends: Arceus! I'll be skipping the Diamond/Pearl remakes because they don't offer enough things the originals didn't to justify the expensive double dip for me (though I'm glad to hear they're at least updating the annoying HM stuff to be more in line with newer games) but Legends looks really interesting and different and I hope it can be at least half as good in execution as it is in concept! Also doesn't hurt that it'll have some new Pokémon and new regional variants for some old ones. I see from the latest news about it that there's going to be a new alternative evolved form for Scyther, my all-time favourite Pokémon; if that means Scyther itself can get a fresh dose of love by extension, then I'm all for it. :3

Triangle Strategy! Coming next March! This is another one with a cool concept that I really hope the final product can pull off. I never did finish the prototype demo that came out earlier this year, but having another update about the game has given me fresh motivation to do so.

Happy Dangan Ronpa S! A spinoff that's basically NDRV3's board game mode writ large! I got pretty addicted to that mode at one point, so I'm looking forward to even more fun interactions with my old favourites. Only a couple of months left to wait for this one!

Tribe Nine! The latest from Too Kyo Games! After it's only had a concept movie for over a year, it's finally been announced to be a mixed-media project with an anime, a mobage and a Webtoon, potentially among other things. The anime's coming surprisingly soon, starting in January, and I'm hoping it'll at least be good fun. I enjoyed last year's Akudama Drive a lot.

AI: The Somnium Files - nirvanA Initiative! Honestly, I'm not sure if the original really needed a sequel, but I loved it so much that I ain't gonna complain about getting more!

There's more besides, but this is the stuff I most wanted to write about.

random

mikogalatea: Sarah from Star Ocean 4, with a perplexed look on her face. ([SO4] Sarah; apples don't fall up!)
I can't believe I only just realised this, but the fact I still think of the Sonic the Hedgehog villain as Dr. Robotnik and not Dr. Eggman really shows my age. ._.;
mikogalatea: Homura and Madoka from Madoka Magica. Homura is embracing Madoka from behind. ([MadoMagi] Homura/Madoka)
Just making a few lists for myself...

First up, a to-do list of games to play:

Hey, hey, oh~! )

Next, tracking the Spring 2021 anime I want to catch up with and finish:

Pink blood, pink blood, pink blood... )

Finally, my tentative list of Summer 2021 anime I'll at least check out one episode of:

How many, or how few, am I likely to stick with this time? )

Also a reminder to myself to watch the last four episodes of Magical Girl Site if the show's still on Amazon (I didn't expect to actually kind of like that edgefest, though to be fair I went in with low expectations to begin with), and to maybe start Love Live! Sunshine!! again (I tried watching it back when it was originally airing, but went off it because I hadn't seen the original at the time and this show expects viewers to have already seen that; now I have finally watched the original recently, I think it's worth giving Sunshine!! another shot).
mikogalatea: Yuuki from Tokyo Xanadu, sporting a cocky little grin. ([TX] Yuuki)
Because this made me laugh, and because I'd like Nijisanji to get better known in the English-speaking world...

Please watch this compilation of Nijisanji Vtubers being chaotic in Cooking Simulator.

It shouldn't need much if any wider context about the featured talents to appreciate, so enjoy!
mikogalatea: Nel from Star Ocean 3, looking unimpressed. ([SO3] Nel; ya rly)
Storytelling pet peeve of the day:

CW: bullying, victim-blaming )

Just one of many tropes that really need to go away... and it's sad that I have to wish situations like that would go away in real life as well.
mikogalatea: Lena from 86, watching red spider lily petals scatter around her. ([86] Lena)
With the Winter season just wrapping up, I might as well pull together a rough list of Spring 2021 anime I want to at least try out:

*86
*Pretty Boy Detective Club
*Cardfight!! Vanguard overDress (don't ask; this'll be my first time watching anything from this franchise)
*Fairy Ranmaru
*To Your Eternity
*Joran: The Princess of Snow and Blood
*The World Ends With You (maybe? I'll admit I never got very far in the original game...)
*Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song

Quite a decent amount on my plate, then, and as always it remains to be seen what I end up sticking with. I will say I'm hopeful for the 86 anime, though, as I really like what I've read of the light novels.
mikogalatea: Primrose from Octopath Traveler, in profile view, walking purposefully forwards with her hand to her chest. ([Octopath] Primrose)
Triangle Strategy looks really cool and interesting and I'll definitely be taking a look at its prototype demo ASAP.
mikogalatea: Masako from Mawaru Penguindrum, sipping a cup of tea while looking out of a window. ([Penguindrum] Masako)
I've been watching Star Driver recently -- aiming to finish it off tonight just finished it, in fact -- and it's got me thinking about something.

After they both worked on Utena together with the rest of Be-PaPas, Ikuhara has since worked on other things (e.g. Mawaru Penguindrum, Yuri Kuma Arashi, Sarazanmai) and Enokido has also since worked on other things (e.g. Melody of Oblivion, the abovementioned Star Driver, Captain Earth).

There's been speculation before in Utena fandom, particularly in response to people acting like Ikuhara made the show singlehandedly, about how much Enokido's writing may have contributed to Utena being as good as it was. I recall that this speculation involved discussing the flaws in Penguindrum and YKA (Sarazanmai hadn't aired yet at the time) and thus what strengths and weaknesses Ikuhara has as a director. That said, I don't think there was much if any discussion of Enokido's post-Utena work or his strengths and weaknesses as a writer for anime based on that.

Basically, I'm wondering what people think of Ikuhara's post-Utena works versus Enokido's post-Utena works, what people prefer and why, and what credit we should assign to whom for Utena being what it was. Right now I suspect the specific combination of Ikuhara and Enokido did the trick to a big extent, and I think the influence of other project members like Saito probably helped as well.

To anyone who's watched any of the shows I mentioned here: what do you think?
mikogalatea: Anko from Bokurano with a microphone in her hand, singing happily. ([Bokurano] Anko)
Here's the Winter 2021 anime I'll be trying out:

*Gekidol
*Horimiya
*I★CHU
*So I'm a Spider, So What?
*Sk8 the Infinity
*Otherside Picnic
*Wonder Egg Priority

I would've had Skate-Leading Stars on there as well, but I've already dropped it because I found the characters to be very unlikeable. They mostly seem like a bunch of jerks, and they're not even the kinds of jerks I find fun to watch. =/

I'd also watch the upcoming new Precure if Crunchyroll ever included Europe (or at least the UK) in the territories it'll stream it to, and the new Show by Rock!! if Funimation ever put up the subbed version for the second season of the original show...

Finally, I'm continuing Higurashi and D4DJ from the previous season!
mikogalatea: Sakaki from Azumanga Daioh, wearing a cat hat and waitress gear. Despite her blank expression, she seems to be enjoying herself. ([AzuDai] Sakaki)
Happy new year, guys! Here's hoping this year will be better than last!
mikogalatea: Hacker from Akudama Drive, operating his drone in darkness. ([Akudama] Hacker)
Out of the whopping thirteen series I was interested in checking out from the Autumn 2020 anime season, I've stuck with seven of them. (Well, almost eight, but I ended up dropping Assault Lily just the other week.) Ultimately, the list of shows I kept was:

*Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gou
*Hypnosis Mic
*Talentless Nana
*Akudama Drive
*Adachi and Shimamura
*Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club
*D4DJ

I actually think that's pretty good going!

Yesterday's episode of Akudama made me tear up. ;.; That and Higurashi have been my top picks this season.
mikogalatea: Nanami from Revolutionary Girl Utena, clearing her throat in irritation. ([Utena] Nanami; annoyed)
Dear Vtuber fandom and various other fandoms,

Can we please not treat Google Translate as anything remotely reliable?!

Much frustration,

-Gala
mikogalatea: Rena from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, looking adorable as heck. ([Higurashi] Rena)
I'm still all right, in case anyone was getting a bit worried!

Rather than playing much in the way of video games in the last couple of months -- I haven't even made much headway into my current Three Houses run since my last post -- I've been falling into other hells. I was in Precure hell for a bit around the end of August to early September, as one series from that franchise (specifically Kira Kira Precure a la Mode) finally got made available to my country fully subtitled, though I've taken a break from that because I can only binge on so much of it at a time; it's good fun and I'm enjoying it, but it's still a kids' show with a predictable formula all the same.

Over the last month has seen me fall into a particularly embarrassing hell -- Vtubers. ^^; It's amazing how much time can disappear even when I just watch a bunch of fansubbed clips; it's not even like I've fallen far enough into this rabbit hole to watch several-hour livestreams! All I'll say about this topic for now is that I think I largely prefer Nijisanji folks to Hololive.

I've even been teetering on the lip of Show by Rock!! hell in the last few days, possibly because watching a bunch of cool song covers by Vtubers has put me in the mood for music anime. I do think, however, this show stands out a lot for the fact it's got girl singers and boy singers in the same series. They're usually totally segregated in this genre.

Most of all, though, I'm going to be checking out a lot of new anime this season. I only watched a couple of summer shows (namely Deca-Dence and Lapis Re:LiGHTs, both of which I actually still need to watch the last few episodes of), but this time there's over a dozen series I want to at least check out the first ep of. (Many of them were originally going to start in spring or summer, but, well, 2020 has been what it is.) Taking a deep breath, they are:

*Higurashi no Naku Koro ni NEW
*Assault Lily Bouquet
*Hypnosis Mic
*Jujutsu Kaisen
*Warlords of Sigrdrifa
*Talentless Nana
*Akudama Drive
*Adachi and Shimamura
*The Day I Became a God
*Gymnastics Samurai
*Dropout Idol Fruit Tart
*Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club
*D4DJ

I'm obviously not expecting to keep up with every one of these, and I can even see myself dropping most of them, but we'll see what I end up sticking with!
mikogalatea: Edelgard from Fire Emblem 16, looking very sure that she'll lead her forces to victory. ([FE16] Edelgard)
Now I feel like I've had a decent enough break from Three Houses following my last playthrough, I've finally started what's going to be my Silver Snow run!

I'm playing as a female Byleth this time, she'll be romancing Dorothea, and I'll be recruiting Mercedes, Ignatz, Leonie, Yuri, Constance, and all the faculty. So far I've just made it back to the start of Chapter 2; I'm intending to zip through the academy phase a little bit faster than I've done before since I'm treading so much familiar ground, by which I mean I'm not going to bother talking to NPCs or characters who aren't or won't be in my class. (Thanks to fandom efforts to compile resources, I can easily look up monastery dialogue anyway.)

Honestly, I'm not expecting this to be my favourite route. It's SS, so that means I'll have to snub certain characters and I'm going to feel terrible about that. I've heard the route is particularly flawed as well, and it doesn't help that my last run was VW, which is apparently very similar to SS.

That said, I am looking forward to watching a decent handful of supports I haven't seen before, plus revisiting and finishing several others. The characters are my favourite thing about this game, after all. :3

I may-or-may-not go through this route at a more leisurely pace than I've done with my previous playthroughs, but either way, let's see how this goes!
mikogalatea: Linhardt from Fire Emblem 16, yawning while waving a hand in front of his face. ([FE16] Linhardt)
Gimme a character and I'll tell you:

My NOTP for them
My BROTP for them
My OTP for them
My second choice pairing for them
My fluffy pairing for them
My angsty pairing for them
My favorite poly ship for them
My weirdest pairing for them
mikogalatea: Ingrid and Ignatz from Fire Emblem 16, post-timeskip. He's promising that once he's completed his painting of her, he'll show it to her and only her. ([FE16] Ingrid/Ignatz)
Name a character and I will give you my top three ships for them!

Might be easiest to do this with Three Houses characters in my case, as I'm so much more likely to have at least three ships for characters from that canon. >>;
mikogalatea: Male Byleth and Yuri from Fire Emblem 16, post-timeskip. Yuri is blushing, his heart aflutter at Byleth saying he's happy to see him again. ([FE16] Male!Byleth/Yuri)
I just cleared my Verdant Wind run in Three Houses! Once again, I got all the pairings I wanted!

This run's pairings )

This was a good route! I enjoyed it a lot more than I did Azure Moon, though Crimson Flower may still be my favourite of the routes I've played, even if that's mainly because I'm most attached to the Eagles as a group.

I want to do more playthroughs sometime, namely Silver Snow and another CF run, but I think I might take a break from this game for a while beforehand. Don't wanna burn out on it, after all, especially when there'll be less and less new material to see with each run I do. >>;
mikogalatea: Yuri and Dorothea from Fire Emblem 16, post-timeskip. He's thrilled by the idea of starting a travelling opera with her. ([FE16] Yuri/Dorothea)
This post is reserved for Yuri/Dorothea because that A-rank was fantastic and I ship it really hard now. ♥

Advance warning, though: some potentially triggery subject matter may be is discussed in the comments.
mikogalatea: Yuri and Hapi from Fire Emblem 16, stargazing while on night watch duty together. ([FE16] Yuri/Hapi)
Ganked from cypsiman:

Name a character from Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and I will tell you what my favorite ships are for them and why!

I might've done a similar meme to this before, but it can't hurt to do something like it again!
mikogalatea: Flayn from Fire Emblem 16, looking adorable while a flurry of colourful flower petals dances in the breeze around her. ([FE16] Flayn)
Coming up to Chapter 8's story battle in my Deer run, which puts me a little under two-thirds of the way through the academy phase now! It's nice when I can blow through the early parts of the game relatively quickly, and Claude's interest in the underlying lore is making this route a good one so far. :3 I've recruited Ingrid into my class, too.

Now for -- you guessed it -- yet another support report!

It's also another pretty long one; CW for brief mention of parental death )

Note to self: stick Coco on to Byleth as an adjutant so she can hopefully get that one last level-up she needs to finally be a dark flier! Not least because I've heard that her and Yuri's paralogue is best done with plenty of flying units...
